Website update
#1
Hi everyone.

Before I release 0.4.7 (which is pretty stable, fast and has potential to bring in new players), I want to update our website. The current one doesn't provide enough info and guidance - people still struggle to find links to content downloads and other info.

I've created a demo for the new design: https://only-a-ptr.github.io/ror-web-047-draft/

EDIT: Second draft based on feedback: http://forum.rigsofrods.org/thread-712-p...ml#pid8055

Things to be done:
  • The homepage banner should be a screenshot slideshow, like the one we already have on the bottom of the page.
  • Homepage texts are stubs.
  • Downloads page: do we even need separate page for this? I'd prefer to just put a "downloads" section to the homepage.
  • The "repo page" stub is incomplete - links are missing.
  • The docs page is a stub - should lead to actual docs with modified looks
  • The forum header needs to be modified to match the design and have more useful links.
  • Footer (all pages) is a stub.
What do you think?

I actually really like it. I also love the links you have to link you everywhere you would want to go. As a curious reader that wonders about everything, this pushes all the right buttons for me  Wink

I would keep the menu design from the current site (https://rigsofrods.org/). I would also suggest possibly implementing the blog into the home page. (possibly a larger section with the blog on one side and statistics on the other.)

The current design is a lot easier on the eyes. Any possible way to modify it with the content you want included?

@Zentro
I don't want any sidebars/sideboxes/news-boxes on the homepage. It's visual clutter and I don't recall ever finding those useful on any website. Further, our blog is currently inactive - I post all the news (not so many of them) here on the forum.

The homepage should have some "get latest news here" links, but in a non-disruptive form.

Regarding the design, the primary feature is to limit horizontal span of the content. My inspiration are sites like https://cmake.org/, http://www.ogre3d.org/ and https://www.blender.org/ - none of them has the logo all the way on the left. I may re-use the icons.

The text is too wide. One line shouldn't contain more than 80 characters, preferably at bit less.

Honestly, I think it's a downgrade from the current rigsofrods.org.
Been here since January of 2013... so not really some noob...
