In Japan, there are many small importers that import foreign cars, they are often domestic market versions. I guess, that this was also the case with 125p.
China was never a particularly special export market for Eastern European cars; Chinese government was buying cars from other governments. Chinese roads were full of Ladas, Volgas, Polonezez, Fiats 125p/126p & Škodas Favorits & Felicias (and Santanas of course). Japan on the other hand is veeeeeeeeeeeeery special, since such cars are very unusual here (except for Lada Niva, UAZ & aforementioned Santana).
Still not particularly special, since even 126p was exported in small numbers to Japan! Few hundred were imported by a local importer at the end of the production (around 1999-2000). Many still survive.
Ah also might drop something about 125p to discussion there is a export UK canper version and a volkswagen diesel engine version .also There was a 126p export version for Japan with a diesel by kubota.2 were made I think 1 still exists
The 126p diesel didn't go into production.
I mean, is that example an original Chinese government' import (i mean, not a modern import).
Eastern Bloc cars in export versions were also available in better trim levels (for example, British market 125p i pictured has stripes & vinyl roof with sunroof, something that people living in Eastern Bloc (and China as well) could only dream of... unless you had western currency)
the diesel 125p could be bought for dolars in a store called "pewex" along with jeans radios and other "luxury"goods. there was also a version called lux with a wartburg headlights.
