New mod types

Dashboard

Custom vehicle HUDs. Simply download a dashboard from the repository and select it in the new UI tab in the in game settings. Custom dashboards existed before but required manual editing of game files. That is now history. Dashboards can include custom fonts and support alternate layouts with different gauge values. Gadget

Standalone tools created using scripting. Download them from the repository and launch them from the top menubar under Tools and Browse gadgets. Existing scripts such as road_editor.as and script_editor.as have been converted to gadgets, and many new ones were added. (Learn more...)

Addonpart and Tuning

A complete game changer for vehicle customization. Download an addonpart bundle from the repository and apply it using the new Tuning menu in the top menubar. All required changes such as adjusting nodes and adding or removing props are handled automatically while the addonpart is equipped. This completely redefines what addon part means. Previously addon parts were raw models and textures shipped with instructions for manually editing the original vehicle files. That is now history. The tuneup mod type is a complementary file format that stores a complete custom vehicle configuration, including addonparts and custom tweaks. See the Tuning panel section below. (Learn more...)

Assetpack

External resource bundles are now available for modders. These can be downloaded from the repository and referenced via the "[AssetPacks]" section of the terrn2 file format or the "assetpacks" section of the truck file format.

Gameplay

Tuning GUI

A new menu in the top menubar that creates tuneups, which are complete customized vehicle configurations built through the tuning UI. The panel allows adding and removing addonparts as well as manual tweaks such as unmounting props and flexbodies or fixing mirrors and wheel rims. These tweaks are often useful for correcting imperfections in addonparts. This panel fundamentally changes vehicle tuning in Rigs of Rods. Previously tuning required manual editing of vehicle files using external tools. From now on tuning is an in game feature with its own dedicated GUI. (Learn more...)

Vehicle info GUI

This refreshed GUI consolidates three previously separate panels into a single tabbed interface that presents all vehicle information and stats in one place. The panel is positioned on the left side of the screen and appears translucent when the mouse cursor moves to the left. It becomes opaque when invoked using the "T" hotkey, which previously showed only stats, or "CTRL+T", which previously showed the description and non-interactive controls. The vehicle thumbnail and name are always displayed at the top, making the panel self describing even when discovered by accident. The Controls tab displays hotkeys as clickable buttons that also highlight vehicle hydraulics in a distinct neon yellow color. Diagnostic views that previously lived in the Tools menu are now integrated here. (Learn more...)

Enhanced Repository Manager

The repository manager has been further improved for usability. The mod detail page has been completely redesigned to match the web repository, now displaying descriptions, images, thumbnails, and taglines, with downloadable files and detailed information presented in a dedicated side panel. Downloads now run in the background, allowing uninterrupted browsing, and installations also complete in the background, removing the need for additional processing after closing the panel. Most importantly, the repository browser is now available in both singleplayer and multiplayer simulation. It can be opened from the pause menu or via the Tools entry in the top menubar, enabling mod browsing with or without pausing the game. (Learn more...)

Environment Audio and Doppler Effect

Returning developer @/Hiradur delivered a major sound update. Terrain objects can now specify an EFX reverb_preset specified. Realistic sound obstruction caused by collision geometry was added, along with a realistic doppler effect. (Learn more...)

LiveRepair mode

An existing feature with a new name and a brand new UI indicator, including a toggle-able hint panel. This should make the feature easier for new users to understand. (Learn more...)

New Interfaces and Gadgets

Terrain Editor improvements

Terrain changes can now be saved directly. Previously edits were written only to the editor_out.log file, requiring manual modification of terrain files. This log file is still generated, but you can now simply select Save changes to terrain from the top menubar. Changes made by the road editor or other gadgets are also saved. (Learn more...)

Node and Beam Utility

Changes made in this tool can now be saved. As with terrain editing, you must first import as project, which is equivalent to unzipping into a directory. Importing is one click and the UI is self explanatory. At the moment only overall spring and damping sliders are available, with more features or gadgets planned for future releases. (Learn more...)

Engine Tool Gadget

A powerful engine testing tool that allows real time editing of engine, engoption, and engturbo parameters. This is made possible by the new scripting concept of "actor sim attributes". Changes cannot yet be saved, but this will be addressed in the future.

Road Editor Gadget

The popular road editor script has been converted into a gadget and gained a new convenience feature: a bird’s eye side scrolling camera commonly found in terrain editors or strategy games. This removes the need to manually fly and lock the free camera.

OGRE Inspector Gadget

A powerful diagnostic tool that displays the scene from the 3D renderer’s point of view. This is enabled by extensive OGRE to script bindings that allow not only reading but also creating and manipulating renderer objects. This opens up virtually unlimited possibilities for enhancing the scene through gadgets. Example scripts and early stage gadgets already hint at what is possible.

Script Editor Gadget

This formerly internal tool has matured significantly. It now supports code folding and code formatting. Example scripts are categorized and easily accessible from the menu bar, as are include scripts. A new errors panel allows jumping directly to source lines, and script exceptions, including wrapped C++ exceptions, are intercepted and reported there. The scripting documentation at the Developer Portal was reworked to showcase the editor and highlight the many new scripting features.

Other changes in Rigs of Rods

Server cURL Scripting

A cURL request function has been added to the server scripting API, allowing scripts to make external HTTP calls.

Server player reports

Players can now report other players on a server for any reason. Server administrators can review all reports and take action as necessary, based on the provided player information.

IP checker via server scripts

Server scripts, now also part of the main GitHub organization, include an optional built-in IP checker that evaluates each joining player’s IP address against a trusted external database (see IP Intelligence). If the IP quality is deemed low (for example, VPN or proxy usage), a configured policy action is applied (kick, warning, etc.); otherwise, the player is allowed to join normally.

What's next?

The road map for the next release is available on the GitHub project board.
