Try unchecking "Export Materials" in export settings.

I need the new .material file because of the edits I made.

Why? The material files Blender exports really aren't suited for RoR. Most just use managedmaterials or create their own material file.
The exported mesh obviously still has the materials assigned, the exporter just won't generate a .material for it.
